📋 The Achilles Tang (Acanthurus achilles) is one of the most strikingly beautiful surgeonfish in the marine hobby, with a jet-black body, a vivid orange teardrop marking near the tail, and a distinctive crescent-shaped caudal fin.
Native to wave-battered surge zones and outer reef slopes across the Pacific Ocean, particularly Hawaii and Polynesia, Achilles Tangs live in areas of constant, turbulent water movement and high dissolved oxygen — conditions that are genuinely difficult to replicate in a home aquarium, and which matter far more for this species than for most other tangs.
We want to be completely upfront with you on this one: the Achilles Tang has a well-documented, poor survival track record in home aquariums, even among experienced reef keepers. It's frequently described as a "white spot magnet," highly susceptible to Cryptocaryon (marine ich) and Amyloodinium (marine velvet), both of which can be fatal, especially in a stressed or improperly acclimated fish. Getting a newly arrived Achilles Tang to start eating can itself be a real challenge. This is not a species where good intentions and average reef-keeping experience are enough — it demands a very large, mature, well-established tank with strong turbulent flow, meticulous water quality, and ideally a dedicated quarantine period before it ever reaches the display tank.
For genuinely advanced keepers with the right setup already in place, the Achilles Tang rewards the effort with one of the most striking colour combinations in the hobby. We'd strongly encourage anyone considering this fish to research thoroughly and speak with our team before purchasing.
