🐠 Black Spot Tang (Acanthurus bariene)

📋 The Black Spot Tang, also known as the Bariene Surgeonfish, Eye-Spot Tang, or Roundspot Tang, has a handsome olive-brown body with irregular grey-blue lines, a distinctive round black spot at the upper gill opening, an orange-rimmed eye, and yellow-orange dorsal and anal fins. Its colours are more subdued as a juvenile, developing into its full, striking pattern only with maturity.
It ranges across a wide stretch of the Indo-West Pacific, from Mozambique and the Maldives to the Solomon Islands, north to the Ryukyu Islands, and south to the Great Barrier Reef, where it inhabits deep coastal reef slopes and outer reef walls, typically below 15 metres and often deeper than 30 metres. That deep-water habitat makes it a a rarity in the aquarium trade. Every Black Spot Tang we ship is feeding well.
Despite its large adult size, it's one of the calmer Acanthurus species, and otherwise peaceful with tankmates. It's fully reef safe, though it should be the only tang in most home aquarium setups, since it can become territorial toward other similarly shaped tangs as it matures. It reaches up to 50cm, so plan on at least 900L.
