📋 The Mimic Eibli Tang (Acanthurus tristis), also known as the Indian Ocean Mimic Tang, has a genuinely remarkable natural history. As a juvenile, it displays an almost identical appearance to the Eibli's Angelfish (Centropyge eibli) — matching the orange vertical stripes, orange breast and eye-ring, and even the black tail with its bright blue edge, so closely that even experienced hobbyists can genuinely struggle to tell them apart. This is a real example of Batesian mimicry, where the tang evolved to resemble a less palatable angelfish species to reduce its own risk of predation while young and vulnerable.
Native to reefs and lagoons across the Indian Ocean, particularly around the Maldives, this species undergoes a genuine transformation between 3 to 5 months of age, gradually losing its angelfish disguise and settling into an adult olive-to-grey body with a lyre-shaped tail edged in white.
This species is a genuinely valuable algae grazer for a reef tank, and generally doesn't conflict with unrelated tank mates. It is, however, genuinely aggressive toward other tangs and surgeonfish, especially those of similar shape or colour, and should be the only one of its kind except in very large systems. Reef safety is generally good, though occasional LPS nipping has been reported by some keepers.
