📋 The Purple Tang, also known as the Yellowtail Tang, has a striking deep purple-blue body with faint darker striping and a bright yellow tail, with yellow-tipped pectoral fins on many specimens.
It comes primarily from the Red Sea, with populations also found in the Gulf of Aden, the Persian Gulf, and the Arabian Sea, and it's highly sought after, one of the more popular tangs in the hobby. Every Purple Tang we ship is feeding well.
It's a valuable algae grazer and a hardy species for a reef tank, generally leaving corals and invertebrates alone. We quarantine new arrivals and keep algae in their diet, since this supports long-term health in all tangs. It's also the boldest species in the otherwise peaceful Zebrasoma genus, so introduce it last, and avoid other Zebrasoma tangs unless your system is very large. It reaches up to 25cm, so plan on at least 380L.
