📋 The Gem Tang, also known as the Gemmatum Tang, Spotted Tang, or Jewelled Tang, has a genuinely striking jet-black body covered in a galaxy of vibrant white spots, with a bright yellow tail and yellow accents on the pectoral fins.
Native to the Western Indian Ocean, around Madagascar, Mauritius, Réunion, Mozambique, and South Africa, this species genuinely inhabits deep reef environments at depths of 25 to over 60 metres, typically found solitary and territorial in the wild — a genuinely challenging habitat that makes collection extremely difficult.
This species is genuinely one of the most prized and expensive fish in the entire saltwater aquarium hobby, with real market prices ranging from several hundred to several thousand dollars depending on size and availability. It's fully reef safe and a genuinely valuable, constant algae grazer. We want to be honest that it's semi-aggressive, particularly toward other tangs and similarly shaped fish, and is best kept as the only tang in the tank.
