📋 The Gem Tang, also known as the Gemmatum Tang, Spotted Tang, or Jewelled Tang, has a striking jet-black body covered in a galaxy of vibrant white spots, with a bright yellow tail and yellow accents on the pectoral fins.
It comes from the Western Indian Ocean, around Madagascar, Mauritius, Réunion, Mozambique, and South Africa, where it inhabits deep reef environments at depths of 25 to over 60 metres, typically solitary and territorial in the wild, a habitat that makes collection difficult. That's part of why it's one of the most prized tangs in the saltwater hobby. Every Gem Tang we ship is feeding well.
It's fully reef safe and a valuable, constant algae grazer. It's semi-aggressive, particularly toward other tangs and similarly shaped fish, so it's best kept as the only tang in the tank. It's sensitive to high nitrates, so regular water changes matter. It reaches up to 23cm, so plan on a spacious, well-established tank of at least 680L.
