📋 The Lieutenant Tang , also known as the Doubleband Surgeonfish or Doubleband Tang, has a genuinely distinctive pale brown to olive-tan body, with a black horseshoe-shaped mark on the shoulder that breaks into two horizontal curved bands as the fish matures — the genuine source of its common name. Its spine area is edged in black, with white along the trailing edge of the tail.
Native to the Indian Ocean, from East Africa to Sri Lanka and the Lesser Sunda Islands of southern Indonesia, this species inhabits reef environments at depths of roughly 1 to 40 metres.
A genuinely interesting natural detail: colouration can shift between orange-beige, olive-tan, or steely grey depending on the individual, and mature males genuinely display more vibrant hues or darker streaks during breeding season to attract a mate — the fish can also darken toward brown, red, or purple tones when stressed. It's fully reef safe and genuinely rare in the aquarium trade, requiring a varied vegetable-based diet and wide, open swimming space with turbulent, well-oxygenated water flow. We want to be honest that it's genuinely territorial, and only one should be kept per tank.
