🐠 Half Black Mimic Tang (Acanthurus pyroferus)

Marine Reef-Safe Large Grazing Tang • Genuine Juvenile Batesian Mimicry of Pygmy Angelfish • Olive-Brown Adult Body With Orange Gill Accent • Advanced Marine Fish

📋 We want to be genuinely upfront about naming: "Half Black Mimic Tang" most commonly refers to Acanthurus pyroferus, whose juveniles mimic the Half Black Angelfish (Centropyge vrolikii). A separate, genuinely much rarer true species, Acanthurus chronixis, shares a similar common name but is naturally restricted to Kapingamarangi Atoll — the vast majority of specimens sold under "Half Black Mimic Tang" outside that specific location are genuinely this species, A. pyroferus.

📋 A genuinely remarkable natural adaptation defines this species: as juveniles, it displays Batesian mimicry, closely copying the colour pattern of local pygmy angelfish species — grey-fronted, black-rear Half Black Angelfish, yellow Lemonpeel Angelfish, or solid yellow Heraldi Angelfish — depending on the specific region it was collected from, gaining protection by resembling a species predators have learned to avoid. As it matures, this mimicry fades, and the adult develops into what's known in the trade as the "Chocolate Tang" — an olive-brown body with darker fins, a black-edged gill cover, and a genuine orange accent just behind the gills.

Native to a genuinely wide range across the Indo-Pacific, this species is fully reef safe and a genuinely valuable, active algae grazer. We want to be honest that it's semi-aggressive and territorial, and best kept as the only tang in the tank, given ample open swimming space to patrol.
