📋 A note on naming: "Half Black Mimic Tang" most commonly refers to Acanthurus pyroferus, whose juveniles mimic the Half Black Angelfish (Centropyge vrolikii). A separate, much rarer true species, Acanthurus chronixis, shares a similar common name but is naturally restricted to Kapingamarangi Atoll; the vast majority of specimens sold under "Half Black Mimic Tang" outside that specific location are this species, A. pyroferus.
A remarkable natural adaptation defines this species: as juveniles, it displays Batesian mimicry, closely copying the colour pattern of local pygmy angelfish species, the grey-fronted, black-rear Half Black Angelfish, the yellow Lemonpeel Angelfish, or the solid yellow Heraldi Angelfish, depending on the specific region it was collected from, gaining protection by resembling a species predators have learned to avoid. As it matures, this mimicry fades, and the adult develops into what's known in the trade as the "Chocolate Tang," an olive-brown body with darker fins, a black-edged gill cover, and an orange accent just behind the gills. It comes from a wide range across the Indo-Pacific, and it's fully reef safe and a valuable, active algae grazer. It's semi-aggressive and territorial, best kept as the only tang in the tank, given ample open swimming space to patrol. It reaches up to 25cm, so plan on at least 470L.
