🐠 Fowleri Tang (Acanthurus fowleri)
Marine Reef-Safe-With-Caution Large Grazing Tang • Bluish Face With Brown-Olive Body & Crescent Tail • Genuinely Uncommon in the Trade • Advanced Marine Fish
📋 The Fowleri Tang, also known as Fowler's Surgeonfish, the Horseshoe Tang, or Blackspine Surgeonfish, has a genuinely distinctive bluish face marked with arcing lines behind the eye, a brown-to-olive body, a bright orange-yellow dorsal fin, and a striking white crescent, or "lyre," accent on its tail.
Native to a genuinely wide range across the Indo-Pacific and northwestern Australia, this species inhabits clear seaward reefs and drop-offs — a genuinely challenging habitat to collect from, which explains why this species is infrequently available in the aquarium trade compared to other tangs.
Adults can genuinely reach up to 45-50cm (18-20"), making this one of the larger-growing Acanthurus tangs, though it's genuinely one of the less aggressive members of its genus despite this size. It's considered reef safe with caution — it's a constant, valuable algae grazer, though we want to be honest it may occasionally nip at corals in a reef setting. This species genuinely needs wide-open, turbulent, well-oxygenated water and a serious dedicated tank given both its size and activity level.
