🐠 Blonde Naso Tang (Naso elegans)

Marine Reef-Safe Large Surgeonfish • Grey Body With Golden-Yellow Dorsal Fin • Genuine Venomous Tail Spines • Advanced Large-Tank Species

📋 The Blonde Naso Tang (Naso elegans), also known as the Elegant Tang or Blonde Lipstick Tang, closely resembles the Naso Tang (Naso lituratus) but is genuinely a distinct species — the two were once considered the same species until being split based on natural range and colouration. The clearest identifying feature is the dorsal fin: this species shows a striking golden-yellow dorsal fin, compared to the black-to-grey dorsal of the standard Naso Tang, alongside a dark bluish-grey body, a thin black mask between the eyes and mouth, and yellow-orange lips.

Native to the Indian Ocean and Red Sea, from the Red Sea south to Durban, South Africa, and east through the western Indian Ocean to Bali, this species inhabits coastal and sheltered reef flats, typically swimming in small groups above rocky bottoms.

Like all surgeonfish, this species carries genuinely venomous tail spines at the base of the tail, capable of inflicting deep cuts — treat every Naso, large or small, as a fish that can genuinely hurt you, and use a rigid container rather than a net wherever possible. This species genuinely doesn't tolerate other tangs and surgeonfish well, and should be the only one of its kind unless the tank is genuinely very large. Given its adult size of up to 46cm, it's a genuine long-term commitment requiring a spacious, well-filtered system.
