📋 The Chevron Tang , also known as the Hawaiian Bristletooth, Hawaiian Surgeonfish, or Black Surgeonfish, undergoes a genuinely dramatic transformation as it matures — juveniles are bright orange-red with dark chevron-shaped markings across the body, the genuine source of its common name, while adults appear black from a distance but reveal fine green longitudinal stripes upon close inspection.
Native to a genuinely wide range across the tropical Pacific, from the Ryukyu Islands of southern Japan to Hawaii, through Micronesia, French Polynesia, and as far south as the Pitcairn Islands, this species inhabits coral-rich reef slopes and lagoons.
This species genuinely commands a premium price in the trade, reflecting both its striking appearance and collection difficulty. It's fully reef safe and a genuinely valuable algae grazer, using its specialised comb-like teeth to scrape algae and organic material from rock. We want to be honest that it's genuinely aggressive toward other tangs and may even be harassed by its own species, so it's best kept as the only tang in the tank.
