📋 The Japanese Dragon Eel, also known as the Dragon Moray Eel or Leopard Moray Eel, has a genuinely striking mottled body in vibrant shades of orange, black, and white, with distinctive enlarged nostril flares and bony "horns" above the eyes that give this species its dramatic, menacing appearance. Large, jet-black eyes and fang-like teeth complete the look, with a lower jaw that genuinely can't fully close due to its curved shape.
Native to the tropical Indo-Pacific, from the African east coast to the western coast of South America, with a genuinely more intensely coloured local variety collected off Japan — the source of its common name — this species inhabits rocky reef formations, using its keen sense of smell to hunt in caves and crevices given its genuinely poor eyesight.
This is a genuinely one of the most sought-after eels in the hobby, and can be quite expensive given its rarity compared to more commonly available morays. We want to be honest that despite being genuinely aggressive and predatory, it can also be quite shy, especially in the first few weeks after introduction, gradually becoming bolder and more visible as it settles in. We want to be upfront: this species is not reef safe, and while it won't directly eat coral tissue, its large size makes it genuinely destructive to reef structures, and it will consume small fish, ornamental shrimp, and crabs.
