📋 The Yellow Edged Moray Eel, also known as the Yellow-Margin, Leopard, or Speckled Moray, has a dark brown-to-black body densely mottled with yellow speckling, a namesake yellow-green margin along its fins, and a black blotch around the gill opening. Juveniles are brown to purple with a yellow-edged fin border, and they become more mottled, with a creamy yellow-gold look, as they mature.
It ranges across the Indo-Pacific, from South Africa and the Red Sea eastward to the Tuamotu and Austral Islands and north to the Ryukyu and Hawaiian Islands, living on coral reefs and in rocky crevices. It's a natural predator of lionfish in the Red Sea, and it's often found with cleaner shrimp working over it. It's mostly active at night, hiding by day and coming out after dark to hunt. Every Yellow Edged Moray Eel we ship is feeding well, and live fish or shrimp make a great first meal in a new tank.
This is a giant of a moray, reaching up to 240cm (nearly 8 feet), so it's for keepers with a serious long-term plan: we recommend about 1,100L (300 gallons) with very strong filtration for a full adult. It leaves corals alone but eats smaller fish and invertebrates, and like all morays it's a skilled escape artist, so a heavy, gap-free lid is essential. Feed it with tongs, and it will be a spectacular centrepiece.
