🐍 Indian Mud Moray Eel (Gymnothorax tile)
Brackish-to-Marine Oddball Predator • Genuinely Mislabelled as "Freshwater" for Decades
⚠️ Please Read First
Despite genuinely being sold as a "Freshwater Moray" throughout the aquarium trade for decades, this species does not live permanently in freshwater — it's genuinely a brackish-to-marine fish that only visits freshwater temporarily, typically to breed. It can tolerate pure freshwater for a few months without obvious discomfort, but genuinely lives significantly longer and healthier in brackish or marine conditions long-term.
📋 The Indian Mud Moray Eel has a brown-to-tan body patterned with irregular pale spots, which genuinely fade toward a more uniform grey as the fish ages. It's a shy ambush predator with genuinely poor eyesight that hunts almost entirely by smell and detecting vibration — worth knowing if you handle this fish or feed by hand, since it can genuinely mistake food-scented fingers for a meal.
Genuinely worth noting: a different species, Gymnothorax polyuranodon, is also sometimes called "freshwater moray" in the trade and has a somewhat different (lighter, yellow-to-white) background colour — the two are occasionally confused.
If kept in freshwater at all, pH genuinely should not drop below 8, or the eel may stop feeding. Groups can genuinely work if all individuals are a similar size, introduced at the same time, and each has its own hiding spot.
