📋 The Zebra Moray Eel has a bold dark brown-to-black body ringed in crisp white bands, and it's the only species in its genus, Gymnomuraena. It ranges across the Indo-Pacific, from the Red Sea and East Africa to Hawaii and the eastern tropical Pacific off Costa Rica.
It's a crustacean specialist, with blunt, pebble-like teeth built to crush shells and not to tear flesh, so it ignores fish entirely: wrasses, tangs, and angelfish can swim right past its face without registering as food. That makes it one of the very few morays that's friendly to fish of any size, and unlike most morays it's docile and often active during the day. It's reef safe with caution: it will still eat crabs and shrimp, so choose any clean-up crew carefully. Every Zebra Moray Eel we ship is feeding well.
It grows large, up to 150cm (nearly 5 feet), and it has a heavy bioload, so plan on at least 470L (125 gallons) for a full adult, with serious filtration. A heavy, gap-free lid is essential, since all morays are escape artists. Feed it with tongs, and it will be a long-lived, unmistakable centrepiece.
