📋 The Snowflake Moray Eel, also known as the Snowflake Eel, Clouded Moray, or Starry Eel, has a striking white body covered in an intricate pattern of black-and-yellow markings that look like scattered snowflakes. It lives on coral and rocky reefs, intertidal flats, and shallow lagoons across the Indo-Pacific and into the Eastern Central Pacific, from the Red Sea and East Africa to Baja California, to depths of 48 metres.
It's one of the most popular and manageable morays in the hobby: smaller than most, and unlike many morays, often active during the day. Like all morays it has poor eyesight and hunts mainly by smell, and its constant mouth-gaping isn't aggression: it's how a moray breathes, pumping water over its gills. It's safe with corals, though ornamental shrimp and small crabs will eventually be found and eaten. Every Snowflake Moray Eel we ship is feeding well, and it makes a great first moray.
It reaches up to 100cm in the wild, typically 60-90cm in aquariums, so plan on at least 190L, and we recommend 285L or more. It's also one of the most famous escape artists in the hobby: it can lift lids and glass covers and will use even the smallest gap around cords or filters, so a weighted or locking lid is a must. Feed it with tongs, and it will be a long-lived, characterful favourite.
