⚠️ Important Information — Please Read First

We want to be genuinely upfront on this one. This species reaches a substantial adult size of up to 35cm (14"), and genuinely needs a large, spacious tank — 500L (135 gallons) at an absolute minimum, with 680L (180 gallons) or more genuinely recommended. Please plan for its full adult size, not the small juvenile typically sold.

📋 The Orange Shoulder Tang, also known as the Orangespot Surgeonfish or Orange-Epaulette Surgeonfish, undergoes a genuinely dramatic colour transformation — vivid yellow juveniles gradually shift into a more subdued blue-grey adult, with the signature orange band behind the gill cover remaining a constant, striking feature throughout its life.

Native to a genuinely wide range across the Indo-Pacific, from Hawaii and Japan to the Great Barrier Reef and Micronesia, this species inhabits reef slopes and lagoon areas at depths of roughly 9 to 46 metres, favouring areas with strong current and abundant algae growth.

This is a genuinely large, energetic swimmer and dedicated algae grazer, remarkably documented to live up to 35 years in the wild. We want to be honest that this species can genuinely become aggressive toward its own kind and other tangs, so careful stocking order matters, and it's best introduced last or kept singly in most home aquariums. It's fully reef safe provided it's genuinely well fed with a steady, plant-rich diet — if it goes hungry, it may start attacking corals. Like all surgeonfish, it carries a genuinely sharp, scalpel-like spine near the tail, so please handle with care.
