⚠️ Important Information — Please Read First
We want to be genuinely upfront on this one. This species genuinely grows quite large, reaching up to 45-48cm (around 18-19"), and expert sources genuinely recommend a minimum aquarium size of 250 gallons or more, with some sources genuinely stating this species is only appropriate for advanced aquarists in tanks of 1500 litres or larger. This species is genuinely considered one of the more aggressive tangs in the hobby, so please plan tank size and tank mates accordingly.
📋 The Pale Lipped Tang, also known as the White Face Tang, Whiteface Tang, White-Spine Surgeonfish, or Palelipped Surgeonfish, has a genuinely distinctive grey-to-brown body with a characteristic white face, a mouth ringed in bluish-white, yellow accents on the dorsal, pectoral, and caudal fins, and a silvery-blue tail.
Native to the Indo-Pacific, including the Seychelles, Maldives, Andaman Sea, Philippines, and Palau, this species is genuinely found around steep overhangs and drop-offs at depths of 3 to 40 metres.
We want to be honest that, like all Acanthurus tangs, this species carries a genuine caudal scalpel-like spine capable of causing deep lacerations, used both defensively and in fights among its own kind, so real care should be taken during any handling or transfers, ideally using a rigid container rather than a net, as the spine can genuinely become tangled. This is genuinely a peaceful species toward other fish despite its more assertive reputation among tangs, and it's fully reef safe, requiring both algae-based and meaty foods to maintain its health and colouration.
