📋 The Thompson's Surgeonfish, also known as Thompson's Tang, has a genuinely uniformly dark brownish-purple body highlighted with pale yellow accents on its fins and tail, with Hawaiian specimens genuinely displaying a distinctive white tail compared to the darker tails seen elsewhere in its range.
We want to share a genuinely interesting fact: this species is named after John W. Thompson, an artist and technician at Hawaii's Bishop Museum. Native to a genuinely vast range spanning the Indo-Pacific, from East Africa and India to southern Japan, the Great Barrier Reef, and Hawaii, this species is genuinely found schooling along steep outer reef slopes and drop-offs at depths of 4 to 120 metres.
This is genuinely one of the least aggressive members of the entire Acanthurus genus, typically not conflicting with other tank mates and generally not overly territorial. We want to be honest that only one specimen should be kept per tank, since it's genuinely still capable of aggression toward its own kind, and it possesses the same sharp, folding scalpel-like spine as other tangs, which should be handled with real care. It's fully reef safe, and in the wild feeds primarily on drifting zooplankton, fish eggs, and crustaceans, genuinely requiring both a protein-rich and algae-based diet in the aquarium, alongside genuinely strong water movement and excellent oxygenation to replicate its natural high-current habitat.
