📋 The Whitespotted Surgeonfish, also known as the Mustard Tang, Spotband Surgeonfish, or Jewel Tang, has a genuinely distinctive deep, oval body in mustard-brown, marked with white bars near the head and numerous small white spots scattered across the rear half, plus bright yellow pelvic fins.
Native to a genuinely vast range across the Indo-Pacific, from Mauritius to Hawaii and French Polynesia, this species inhabits shallow, turbulent surge zones less than 8 metres deep, often on bare rock free of coral where algae thrives in the bright, wave-tossed water.
A genuinely remarkable natural specialist: in the wild, this species shoals in groups of 10 to over 100, grazing algae while navigating exceptionally strong water movement with real precision — genuinely, no flow is too strong for this species, and it thrives in turbulent, well-oxygenated conditions that most other tangs can't tolerate. We want to be honest that it's genuinely quite active and needs real, ample swimming space, becoming territorial if kept in too small a tank, and can be aggressive toward its own kind and other tangs. It's fully reef safe, a valuable algae grazer, and like all surgeonfish, carries a genuinely sharp, scalpel-like spine at the base of the tail used for defence, so please handle with real care.
