🐠 Yellow Mimic Tang (Acanthurus pyroferus)

Marine Reef-Safe Algae-Grazing Tang • Genuine Regional Dwarf-Angelfish Mimicry • Colour-Changing Species • Intermediate Marine Fish

📋 The Yellow Mimic Tang , also known as the Chocolate Surgeonfish or Mimic Surgeonfish, has a genuinely fascinating juvenile disguise — young fish adopt the exact colour pattern of a local dwarf angelfish species for predator protection, and which pattern they copy genuinely depends purely on where they were collected. Most commonly this means a bright yellow body with a blue eye ring, mimicking the Lemonpeel Angelfish, but in areas where that species is absent, juveniles instead mimic the Half-Black or Pearlscale Angelfish (pale grey fading to black) or the plain Yellow/Herald's Angelfish. As they mature, the disguise is genuinely abandoned entirely — adults settle into an olive-brown body with darker fins, an orange patch behind the pectoral fin, and a yellow-edged tail, a look that carries no resemblance to any angelfish.

Native to a genuinely wide range across the Indo-Pacific, this species inhabits lagoon and seaward reefs, especially areas with mixed coral, rock, and sand.

It's fully reef safe and a genuinely useful algae grazer, though it can be territorial toward other tangs, particularly similarly shaped species, so it should generally be the only tang in the tank unless the system is genuinely very large.
