🐍 Zig Zag Eel (Mastacembelus armatus)

Freshwater-to-Light-Brackish Oddball • Genuinely Not a True Eel • Sand-Burrowing Nocturnal Predator

📋 The Zig Zag Eel, also called the Tire Track Eel or Tyre-Track Eel, is genuinely one of the largest commonly kept spiny eels, instantly recognisable by the dark, maze-like markings running along its elongated, snake-like body. Despite the name, it's genuinely not a true eel at all — it belongs to the spiny eel family, Mastacembelidae, a separate lineage from true eels.

This species is genuinely primarily freshwater but tolerates light brackish conditions, up to about specific gravity 1.005-1.010, and some keepers genuinely add a small amount of aquarium salt to help prevent skin infections from the burrowing lifestyle — though a well-run freshwater tank works just as well.

Zig Zag Eels are sand burrowers and spend much of their time partially hidden with only their head exposed, ambushing passing prey at night. They're genuinely shy as juveniles but become more territorial as they mature, particularly toward their own species — only keep more than one in a genuinely very large tank with multiple separate territories. They coexist well with other large, robust fish that are too big to be seen as food.
