🐟 Dragon Goby (Gobioides broussonnetii)
Oddball Display Fish • Genuine Sand-Sifting Detritivore • Brackish Water for Life, Not a Freshwater Fish
📋 The Dragon Goby, also called the Violet Goby, is an oddball fish prized for its eel-like, elongated body and violet-to-bluish iridescent colouring. Despite its fearsome name and wide, toothy mouth, it's genuinely a gentle detritivore, sifting through sand with its teeth to scrape algae and detritus rather than actively hunting.
A genuinely important note: there's real confusion in the trade between this species and a smaller, closely related species (Gobioides peruanus) that tolerates freshwater better. Some retailers genuinely mislabel true G. broussonnetii as freshwater-suitable, when it genuinely isn't — this species requires stable brackish water for life, and kept in freshwater too long it develops skin lesions, though it typically heals once proper brackish conditions are restored.
It's genuinely peaceful and often shy, usually retreating to caves when not actively sifting. Juveniles can tolerate loose groups, but adults genuinely become more territorial and solitary with age — a "harem" of one male with several females is sometimes recommended if keeping more than one.
