🐠 Black & Gold Chromis (Neoglyphidodon nigroris)
Marine Damselfish • Genuinely Territorial Adult Temperament • Vivid Golden Juvenile Colouration • Beginner-Hardy But Please Read First
📋 The Black & Gold Chromis (Neoglyphidodon nigroris), also known as the Gold Nugget Damselfish or Behn's Damselfish, is sold as an attractive juvenile with a bright yellow body crossed by two black bars — a genuinely eye-catching fish at this life stage.
Native to reef environments across the Indo-Pacific, this species is technically a damselfish rather than a true member of the Chromis genus, despite the common name — a naming choice some experienced reefers feel undersells just how territorial this species becomes.
We want to be honest with you here: this is genuinely one of the more difficult damselfish personalities as it matures. Multiple experienced marine keepers describe adults as becoming distinctly aggressive and territorial, often losing much of the attractive golden juvenile colouration in the process and developing a duller, darker adult appearance. This is a real "grows up differently than expected" situation — the charming juvenile you bring home is not necessarily a preview of the adult temperament or looks you'll end up with in a year or two. It's best kept singly, in a spacious tank with ample rockwork and hiding places, and thoughtful tank mate selection matters more with this species than with most beginner damsels.
Despite this, it remains a genuinely hardy, easy-care fish for keepers who go in with realistic expectations about its adult behaviour.
