🐟 Black Skirt Tetra (Gymnocorymbus ternetzi)
A Silver-Grey Body Fading Into Bold Black Fins • The Classic Species Behind Our White Skirt and Cosmic Tetra Varieties • Exceptionally Hardy and Widely Kept
📋 The Black Skirt Tetra has a diamond-shaped, silver-grey body with bold black vertical bars and long, flowing black dorsal, anal, and caudal fins that trail behind it like a skirt, exactly where the species' common name comes from.
It comes from the Paraguay River basin in South America, naturally inhabiting slow-moving tributaries and floodplain pools. Every Black Skirt Tetra we ship is feeding well.
This is the classic species behind our White Skirt and Cosmic Tetra colour varieties, and one of the hardiest, most widely kept tetras in the hobby, tolerant of a wide range of water parameters. It can show real fin-nipping tendencies in very small groups, so a proper school of 6-10 or more keeps this behaviour spread out and the fish noticeably calmer overall. It reaches 5-6cm, so a 75L tank suits a school well.
