📋 The Penguin Tetra (Thayeria boehlkei) is a striking freshwater schooling fish known for its bold black diagonal stripe running from the tail up through the body — a marking so distinctive it gives the species its common name, echoing the tilted, upright posture of a swimming penguin.
Native to the slow-moving forest streams and tributaries of the Amazon basin in Peru, Penguin Tetras have a slender silver body with a subtle gold sheen, offset by that signature dark stripe that separates them at a glance from other tetra species.
Naturally active and social, Penguin Tetras spend most of their time in the upper-to-mid water column, where their constant, gentle movement and unusual swimming angle add visual interest without ever appearing stressed or erratic.
