A note on naming: the Flame Tetra, also known as the Von Rio Tetra or Fire Tetra, is sometimes confused with, or even sold as, the Ember Tetra, a distinct, smaller species. Our Flame Tetra is specifically Hyphessobrycon flammeus.
 
📋 The Flame Tetra has a silvery body with flame-red-to-orange fins, named for the Latin flammeus, meaning flame-coloured, a species with one of the longest legacies in the aquarium hobby.
It comes from coastal rivers near Rio de Janeiro in southeastern Brazil, where it has been listed on Brazil's threatened species list since 2004, making the aquarium population an important part of keeping the species widely available. Every Flame Tetra we ship is feeding well.
This is a hardy, easygoing schooling species, peaceful toward its own kind and other community fish alike. It does best in a school of 6-10 or more, thriving in a soft, sandy-bottomed tank with some decaying leaf litter to mimic its natural habitat. It reaches up to 4cm, so a 60L tank suits a school well.
