This species is venomous. Its dorsal, pelvic, and anal spines can deliver a sting commonly described as similar to a strong bee sting, but longer-lasting and more painful — and some people may have an allergic reaction to the venom. Always use long tools during tank maintenance and feeding, and keep hands well clear of the fish at all times. If a sting does occur, seek medical attention, particularly if you have any known allergies or a severe reaction develops.
📋 The Antennata Lionfish (Pterois antennata), also known as the Spotfin Lionfish or Ragged-Finned Firefish, is a dramatic marine predator with bold red, white, and black vertical stripes, elaborate fan-shaped pectoral fins, and distinctive tentacle-like appendages above each eye.
Native to coral reefs, rocky crevices, and lagoons across the Indo-Pacific, this species is most active from dusk through dawn, typically retreating into caves and rockwork during daylight hours. Subdued lighting in the aquarium helps encourage more natural activity levels.
Newly introduced specimens will often refuse prepared foods initially, and live saltwater feeder shrimp are commonly needed to encourage first feedings before transitioning to frozen foods. As an ambush predator, it will consume any fish or shrimp small enough to fit in its mouth, so tank mate selection matters — it's generally peaceful toward fish too large to be viewed as prey, but adults can become aggressive toward their own species.
