📋 The Fuzzy Dwarf Lionfish, also known as the Shortfin Lionfish, has a striking red, white, and black striped body, with large, fan-shaped, fringed pectoral fins that give the species its "fuzzy" name and help disguise its outline from predators. It's native to a wide range across the Indo-Pacific, where it inhabits reef environments and hunts among rocks and crevices at night as an ambush predator.
It's a popular, personable lionfish that suits smaller tanks better than its larger relatives, and it often becomes tame and recognises its keeper over time, approaching the glass or even your hands. It's reef safe with caution: it won't harm coral, but it will eat any fish or crustacean small enough to fit in its mouth, and it shouldn't be housed with fish that may nip at its large, showy fins. Some fish may initially refuse frozen or prepared foods and prefer live prey at first.
Its dorsal spines are venomous, capable of a sting similar to a very severe bee sting, with a stronger reaction possible depending on individual sensitivity. Because it becomes tame, it's worth taking extra care when your hands are in the tank. Never capture it with a net, since its spines can become entangled in the mesh, and always use a container.
