📋 The Reef Stonefish is the ultimate master of camouflage. Its irregular, warty body, covered in bumps and outgrowths and coloured dark green to brown with patches of orange, red, or yellow, makes it look strikingly like an algae- or coral-covered stone resting on the seafloor. It's native to a wide range across the Indo-Pacific, the Persian Gulf, and the Red Sea, where it rests motionless among rocks and coral in shallow coastal waters, reefs, and mangrove areas, preferring a complex environment with plenty of structure over open sand.
It's also the most venomous fish known. Its thirteen dorsal spines each connect to venom glands, and the spines are stiff and sharp enough to pierce thin-soled shoes. A sting causes severe pain, shock, and tissue damage, and it can be fatal, particularly in children, the elderly, and people with weakened health. A stonefish antivenom exists, and prompt medical care is essential. That makes this species suitable only for expert aquarists who fully understand and accept these risks: never place hands in the tank without being certain where the fish is, and always use a rigid container and not a net for any transfer.
It's a patient ambush predator that settles into the sand or mud and lies completely still, striking with remarkable speed at anything that comes within range, and it can swallow prey nearly as long as its own body. It's reef safe with caution: generally peaceful and not damaging to corals, but it will eat any tankmate small enough to swallow.
