📋 The Red Leaf Scorpionfish, also known as the Paperfish, has a deep, laterally compressed, leaf-shaped body in vivid red. The species is highly variable in colour, also occurring in yellow, brown, olive, pink, black, and mottled forms, and it's the same species as our Leaf Scorpionfish, in a different colour form. It's native to a vast range across the Indo-Pacific, from East Africa to the Galápagos Islands, north to southern Japan and Hawaii, and south to Australia and French Polynesia, inhabiting reef flats, outer reef slopes, and current-swept channels.
It's a masterful example of camouflage, perfecting its disguise as a dead, drifting leaf by gently swaying from side to side in the water, a behaviour that becomes more pronounced when it feels threatened. It also regularly sheds its entire skin, once or twice a month, into the surrounding water. It's an ambush predator: it won't bother corals or sessile invertebrates, but it will eat any small fish or crustaceans that fit in its mouth, so choose tankmates with care. Every Red Leaf Scorpionfish we ship is feeding well, often on live foods like river or grass shrimp, and many can be trained to accept food from tongs over time.
Its spines are venomous, and a sting is painful, with the effects varying from person to person, so seek medical attention if stung. Please take care during all tank maintenance and never handle it without protection.
