📋 The Red Leaf Scorpionfish, also known as the Paperfish or simply Leaf Scorpionfish, has a genuinely deep, laterally compressed, leaf-shaped body in vivid red, part of a species that's genuinely highly variable in colouration, also occurring in yellow, brown, olive, pink, black, and mottled forms.
Native to a genuinely vast range across the Indo-Pacific, from East Africa to the Galápagos Islands, north to southern Japan and Hawaii, and south to Australia and French Polynesia, this species inhabits reef flats, outer reef slopes, and current-swept channels.
This is a genuinely masterful example of camouflage, perfecting its disguise as a dead, drifting leaf by gently swaying from side to side in the water, a behaviour that becomes more pronounced when the fish feels threatened. We want to share a genuinely fascinating detail: this species regularly sheds its entire skin, roughly twice a month, into the surrounding water. It's a genuine ambush predator, and while it won't bother corals or sessile invertebrates, we want to be honest that it will eat any small fish or crustaceans that fit in its mouth, so tank mates need real care in selection. New arrivals often require live foods like river or grass shrimp initially, though many can genuinely be trained to accept food from tongs or even a net over time.
