📋 The Zebra Turkeyfish, also known as the Zebra Lionfish, Dwarf Lionfish, or Fan Dancer, is a distinctive lionfish with large, fan-shaped pectoral fins and tall, quill-like dorsal spines over a body marked with red-brown to reddish-brown vertical bars alternating with white. It's often confused with the similar Fuzzy Dwarf Lionfish. Helpful clues are the pair of large white spots at the base of the tail and the relatively short pectoral fin rays, which don't extend much beyond the membrane between them.
It's native to the Indo-West Pacific, where it inhabits coral reefs, rubble zones, sheltered lagoons, and caves, usually at depths of 3 to 60 metres, and it's more compact than many of its larger lionfish relatives, growing to about 25cm. Adults are generally solitary, though small groups are not uncommon, and wild fish have even been seen hunting cooperatively. It's a patient ambush predator that will eat anything that fits in its mouth, and may attempt prey too large to swallow if hungry, so choose tankmates that are comfortably too large to be eaten. It isn't reef safe, since it will consume small fish, shrimp, and crustaceans.
Its dorsal, anal, and pelvic spines are venomous. A sting is painful, similar to a bee sting but stronger, though rarely fatal, and many individuals become tame and recognise their keeper, so extra care with your hands in the tank is worthwhile. Never net it, since the spines can tangle in the mesh, and use a container instead.
