📋 The Cockatoo Waspfish, also known as the Sailfin Rogue Scorpionfish, has a distinctive laterally compressed body with a dramatic, sail-like dorsal fin running from the top of the head almost to the tail. Its colouring is highly variable, occurring in cream, brown, red, yellow, or blue, often marked with irregular spots. It's native to the Western Pacific, from Malaysia and Indonesia to Japan and Australia, where it inhabits sandy, silty, or rubble bottoms and seagrass beds at shallow depths.
It's one of the more unusual scorpionfish available, and a true master of camouflage: it mimics a crumpled dead leaf or a drifting piece of seaweed, swaying with the current as it waits for small shrimp and crustaceans to pass. And when its dorsal fin is spread, it forms a crest resembling a cockatoo's, which is where the name comes from.
Its dorsal, anal, and pelvic spines are venomous, and a sting is extremely painful, comparable to a wasp sting, which is the origin of "waspfish." Care with maintenance and never handling it without protection keeps it safe. It's mostly active at night and an ambush predator of live foods, and every Cockatoo Waspfish we ship is feeding well on live saltwater feeder shrimp. It's reef safe with caution: it won't harm corals, but tankmates should be passive, similarly slow-moving species, since it may eat small fish and shrimp and its spines can injure curious tankmates that nip at it.
