📋 The Blacksaddle Filefish, also known as the Mimic Filefish or False Puffer, has a fascinating natural history: it's a completely harmless species that has evolved to closely mimic the highly toxic Valentini Puffer (Canthigaster valentini), right down to matching sandy-grey colouring, black saddle markings, and a yellow tail. It's a classic case of Batesian mimicry, where a harmless species gains protection by resembling a dangerous one, and the two species school together in the wild. It's the same species as our Mimic Filefish listing, under its other common name.
Reliable ways to tell it from the puffer: A filefish has a small dorsal spine that the puffer lacks, longer-based dorsal and anal fins, and it cannot inflate its body when threatened. It's native to a wide range across the Indian and Pacific Oceans, where it inhabits clear lagoons and seaward reefs to around 25 metres. It's reef safe with caution: it may nip at stony and soft corals and isn't safe with small crustaceans, snails, or crabs, and it will also eat Aiptasia, a welcome bonus. It's slow-moving and shy, and does best with peaceful tankmates and gentle water flow.
