📋 The Blacksaddle Filefish , also known as the Mimic Filefish or False Puffer, has a genuinely fascinating natural history — it's a completely harmless species that has evolved to closely mimic the appearance of the highly toxic Valentini Puffer (Canthigaster valentini), right down to matching sandy-grey colouration, black saddle markings, and a yellow tail. This is a genuine, well-documented case of Batesian mimicry, where a harmless species gains predator protection by resembling a dangerous one, and the two species are genuinely known to school together in the wild.
Reliable ways to tell them apart: the filefish has two dorsal fins compared to the puffer's one, a genuinely broader dorsal and anal fin base, and — perhaps most tellingly — it cannot inflate its body when threatened, unlike the puffer it imitates.
Native to a genuinely wide range across the Indian and Pacific Oceans, this species inhabits clear lagoons and seaward reefs to around 25 metres. It's considered reef safe with caution — it may nip at stony and soft corals and isn't safe with small crustaceans, snails, or crabs, though it's also documented to eat Aiptasia, a welcome bonus. It's genuinely slow-moving and shy, doing best with peaceful tank mates and gentle water flow.
