🐠 Whitespotted Pygmy Filefish (Rudarius ercodes)

Marine Reef-Safe-With-Caution Nano Filefish • Tan-to-Brown Body With Silvery-White Spots & a Paddle-Like Tail • Genuinely Big on Personality Despite Its Tiny Size • Beginner-Friendly Marine Fish

📋 The Whitespotted Pygmy Filefish, also known as the White Spotted Pygmy Filefish, has a genuinely charming, diminutive tan-to-brown body dotted with prominent silvery-white spots, pouty coloured lips, and a distinctive paddle-like tail, reaching a genuinely tiny maximum length of only 3 inches.

Native to temperate waters around Japan and south to Taiwan, this species is genuinely found in seagrass beds and areas surrounded by macroalgae.

We want to share a genuinely delightful fact: this species has real documented ability to adjust its colouration and patterns depending on its surroundings and mood, ranging from distinctly spotted to solid shades of green. This is genuinely one of the most personable little fish in the hobby, big on personality, intelligence, and charm — some individuals genuinely learn to recognise their keeper, swimming over and begging for food, and have even been documented spitting small jets of water above the surface in anticipation of feeding. This is a genuinely hardy, fast-growing, peaceful species, comfortable in groups and high-flow environments, and readily accepts frozen and prepared foods without needing live food. It's considered reef safe with caution — a small monitored group has been kept successfully alongside both hard and soft corals without observed nipping, though it may consume smaller invertebrates.
