📋 The Whitespotted Pygmy Filefish is a charming, diminutive fish with a tan-to-brown body dotted with prominent silvery-white spots, pouty coloured lips, and a distinctive paddle-like tail, reaching a tiny maximum length of only about 7.5cm (3 inches). It's native to temperate waters from Japan south to Taiwan, where it lives in seagrass beds and areas surrounded by macroalgae.
It has a delightful ability to adjust its colouring and patterns to its surroundings and mood, ranging from distinctly spotted to solid shades of green. It's one of the most personable little fish in the hobby, big on personality, intelligence, and charm: some individuals learn to recognise their keeper, swimming over and begging for food, and some even spit small jets of water above the surface in anticipation of feeding.
It's a hardy, fast-growing, peaceful species, comfortable in groups and in high-flow environments, and readily accepts frozen and prepared foods without needing live food. It's reef safe with caution: a small, monitored group has been kept successfully alongside both hard and soft corals without observed nipping, though it may consume smaller invertebrates.
