📋 The Tasselled Filefish, also known as the Leafy Filefish or Prickly Leatherjacket, has a genuinely unique appearance — a laterally compressed, tan-to-light-brown body marked with dark horizontal stripes, covered in numerous tiny, leaf-like tassels that break up its outline for a truly effective natural camouflage among seaweed and marine algae.
Native to reefs across the Indo-Pacific, including Australia, Indonesia, Japan, and the Philippines, this species is genuinely a relative of the triggerfish family, and moves in a slow, deliberate, drifting manner that adds to its leaf-like disguise.
This is a genuinely peaceful, active species that spends its time swimming and browsing throughout the tank, and won't bother most tank mates — with one honest exception: it can genuinely be aggressive toward its own kind or closely related filefish species. We want to be upfront that this species is a poor, sluggish swimmer given its small fins, so plenty of hiding spots and shelter genuinely matter, especially when it feels threatened. We want to be honest that this species is not reef safe, and will genuinely feed on a wide range of invertebrates. It should also never be housed with puffers or triggerfish, which may nip at its delicate skin tassels.
