🐠 Mimic Filefish (Paraluteres prionurus)
A Near-Perfect Copy of a Toxic Puffer • A Classic Batesian Mimic • Peaceful, Slow-Moving, and Fascinating
 
📋 The Mimic Filefish, also known as the Blacksaddle Filefish, is sometimes sold in the trade as a "Mimic Saddle Puffer," but it isn't a pufferfish at all: it's a filefish that has evolved to look almost identical to the toxic Valentini Puffer (Canthigaster valentini), a classic case of Batesian mimicry. The two species are so alike that they're often found schooling together in the wild. It's the same species as our Blacksaddle Filefish listing, under its other common name.
It has a convincing cream-to-sandy body marked with dark brown saddle-shaped bands, brownish-orange spotting on the lower half, bright yellow fins, and blue striping along the back. The cleanest way to tell it from the puffer: A filefish has a small dorsal spine that the puffer lacks, longer-based dorsal and anal fins, and it cannot inflate its body when threatened. It lacks pelvic fins, like true pufferfish, and uses its pectoral fins for movement. It inhabits coral reef environments across the Indo-Pacific, alongside the toxic puffer it mimics.
It's a slow-moving, shy, and peaceful species, so gentle water flow and calm tankmates matter, and strong currents are best avoided. It's non-aggressive toward other fish, except others in its own genus. It's reef safe with caution: it may nip at Aiptasia, small crustaceans, snails, crabs, corals, and tubeworms. It's a filefish and doesn't carry the toxin of the puffer it copies. Every Mimic Filefish we ship is feeding well; offer at least three small meals a day from a varied menu.
