📋 We want to be genuinely upfront on identity: this species is sometimes sold in the trade as a "Mimic Saddle Puffer," but it's genuinely not a pufferfish at all — it's a filefish that has evolved to look almost identical to the toxic Valentini Puffer (Canthigaster valentini), a genuine, scientifically documented case of Batesian mimicry. The two species are so alike that they're often found schooling together in the wild. The cleanest way to tell them apart is the dorsal spine count: this filefish genuinely has two dorsal spines, while the true puffer it mimics has only one.
 
📋 The Mimic Filefish, also known as the Mimic Saddle Puffer or Blacksaddle Filefish, has a genuinely convincing cream-to-sandy body marked with dark brown saddle-shaped bands, brownish-orange spotting on the lower half, bright yellow fins, and blue striping along the back.
Native to a genuinely wide range across the Indo-Pacific, this species inhabits coral reef environments alongside the toxic puffer it mimics.
This species genuinely lacks pelvic fins, like true pufferfish, and has adapted to use its pectoral fins for movement. We want to be honest that it's a genuinely slow-moving, shy, and peaceful species, so gentle water flow and calm tank mates matter, avoiding strong currents. It's non-aggressive toward other fish, with the exception of others in its own genus.
