📋 The Citron Clown Goby (Gobiodon citrinus), also known as the Citron Goby or Poison Goby, is a tiny, big-headed nano fish with a vivid lemon-yellow to pale yellow body, electric-blue lines radiating around the eyes and gills, and a blue stripe along the dorsal fin.
Native to coral-rich reefs across the Indo-West Pacific, from the Red Sea to Mozambique, east to Samoa, and south to the Great Barrier Reef, this species lives almost exclusively among the branches of Acropora and other stony corals, perching on ledges to survey its surroundings.
An interesting natural trait worth knowing: this species lacks scales and instead relies on a thick, bitter-tasting toxic mucus coating for protection, which is exactly why it's sometimes nicknamed the "Poison Goby" — predators that try to eat it quickly learn to leave it alone. For aquarium keepers this poses no real risk, though it's still sensible to avoid excessive handling. It's generally considered reef safe, though it may occasionally nip at the polyps or base of Acropora and other SPS corals. Newly acquired wild-caught specimens can sometimes be a little finicky and slow to accept non-living foods, so patience during the first few days is worthwhile.
With established live rock or SPS coral to perch on, it thrives as a Distinctive Coral-Dwelling Nano Display Fish.
