We want to be genuinely upfront on this one. This species is a real, dedicated tunnel-builder, and a group can genuinely move several pounds of sand per day, reshaping substrate and potentially destabilising loosely placed rockwork. All rock structures must genuinely rest securely on the tank base or a stable support, never loosely on sand, before this species is introduced.
 
📋 The Engineer Goby , also called the Convict Blenny or Convict Goby, is genuinely neither a true goby nor a blenny — it belongs to its own unique family, Pholidichthyidae. Juveniles are sleek black with a bold white stripe, genuinely mimicking the venomous Striped Eel Catfish for protection from predators, while adults develop an irregular pattern of cream or white bars and become considerably more secretive.
Native to the west-central Pacific, from the Philippines to the Solomon Islands, this species genuinely inhabits shallow lagoons and coastal reefs, where juveniles form tight schools sheltering under ledges.
It's considered reef safe with caution — it won't directly harm corals or invertebrates, but its genuine relentless burrowing can shift sand onto low-placed corals and disturb the aquascape. This species is genuinely hardy and disease-resistant once established, and does best introduced as a small group or pair simultaneously, in a mature tank with a deep sand bed. We want to be honest that it eventually grows quite large, so please plan tank size around its adult size, not the small striped juvenile typically sold.
