📋 The Green Canary Blenny (Meiacanthus tongaensis), also known as the Tongan Canary Blenny, is an upgraded twist on the standard Canary Blenny — retaining a bright yellow body but adding a vivid green head and a long black stripe running down the dorsal fin.
This species is genuinely endemic to the South Pacific island of Tonga, meaning it's found nowhere else in the wild, which makes it a meaningfully rarer sight in the trade than its close relative, the standard Canary Blenny.
Like other Meiacanthus fang blennies, this species carries a pair of small, venomous canine teeth used purely for self-defence — its bite isn't dangerous to people but is genuinely painful, so hand feeding is strongly discouraged and some caution is worth taking around children. It has a well-developed swim bladder that lets it "hover" gracefully in open water, darting quickly and stopping suddenly as it hunts for passing zooplankton. Worth noting for reef tanks: while it won't touch corals, small ornamental shrimp and feather dusters can occasionally be at some risk.
Genuinely peaceful and reef safe, it thrives as a Distinctive Rare Reef Display Fish.
