🐠 Smith's Blenny (Meiacanthus smithi)

Marine Reef-Safe Venomous Fang Blenny • Pearl-White Body With Black Stripe • Genuinely Peaceful Despite Its Venom • Beginner-Friendly Marine Fish

📋 The Smith's Blenny , also known as the Disco Blenny or White Blenny, has a genuinely elegant pearl-white body with a bold black stripe running from the chin through the eye and along the dorsal fin to the tail.

Native to the Indo-Pacific, this species belongs to the genus Meiacanthus, the true "fang blennies" — and genuinely unlike most blennies, which perch on rock, this species is semi-pelagic with a well-developed swim bladder, hovering freely in open water and darting into rockwork only when it needs to hide.

We want to genuinely reassure rather than alarm: while it does carry a mildly venomous bite delivered through grooved canine teeth, this is used purely defensively against predators, not offensively toward tank mates — its venomous reputation actually makes it genuinely safer to house alongside larger or more assertive fish that would otherwise view it as prey. The bite is not dangerous to people, though it can cause a mild, painful welt, so please never attempt to hand-feed this species. It's fully reef safe and genuinely peaceful toward unrelated tank mates, though it can be territorial toward other blennies or similarly shaped fish in a smaller tank.
