📋 The Red Lip Blenny, also called the Horseface Blenny, has a distinctive mottled dark-red-to-grey body, with vivid red lips and small branching cirri over the eyes that give it a slightly horse-like face.
It comes from the Caribbean and wider Western Atlantic, inhabiting shallow, wave-battered reef crests and rocky shores, where it defends a patch of algae by day and retreats into crevices at night. Every Red Lip Blenny we ship is feeding well.
This species carries two razor-sharp canine teeth and defends its territory confidently, readily dashing out to nip at tankmates, including fish considerably larger than itself, which is why it's sometimes called the "devil fish" in some regions. It's best suited to a large, well-established tank with robust tankmates capable of holding their own, or kept as the sole blenny in a species-focused setup. It feeds almost entirely on algae and detritus in the wild, and benefits from an already established tank with real natural algae growth. It's fully reef safe toward corals, though it may occasionally pick at small benthic invertebrates. Given its territorial nature, keep just one per tank, or a proven mated pair. It reaches up to 19cm, so a 210L tank suits it well.
