The Japanese Pygmy Angelfish is a temperate-to-subtropical species from the cooler waters off southern and central Japan, and it genuinely prefers water noticeably cooler than a typical tropical reef tank — some sources cite an ideal range as low as 18–23°C, well below the 24–28°C most reef systems are run at. Wild-caught specimens are meaningfully more sensitive to this, though some captive-bred or long-acclimated individuals adapt to warmer conditions over time. Please ask us directly about the specific specimen's acclimation history and the temperature it's currently being kept at before purchasing, especially if your existing system runs on the warmer side.
 
📋 The Japanese Pygmy Angelfish (Centropyge interruptus), also known as the Japanese Angelfish or Interruptus Angel, is a genuinely spectacular dwarf angelfish with an orange body scattered in neon blue speckles that grow larger and shift toward purple near the tail, and a bright yellow caudal fin.
Found concentrated around southern and central Japan, with smaller populations near Midway and Kure in the northwestern Hawaiian Islands, this species is genuinely rarely collected, making it one of the more prized and expensive dwarf angelfish in the hobby.
This species can be genuinely shy when first introduced, taking time to settle before becoming confidently territorial — it's best added as the very last fish to an already well-established tank. It's considered reef safe with caution, generally leaving soft corals and LPS alone, though as with all Centropyge, individual behaviour can vary.
