We want to be genuinely upfront on this one. Potter's Angelfish is endemic exclusively to Hawaii and the Johnston Atoll, and in 2021 Hawaii banned commercial aquarium fish collection entirely — meaning wild specimens can no longer be legally newly collected from the wild. Current availability comes from existing stock and a genuinely very new captive-breeding effort, with published survival rates still low as researchers refine the process. This genuinely explains both the rarity and pricing of this species, and we'd encourage asking us directly about the specific origin of any specimen you're considering.
 
📋 The Potter's Angelfish (Centropyge potteri), also known as the Potter's Pygmy Angelfish or Rusty Angelfish, has a genuinely striking appearance — a brilliant orange body marbled with pale-to-dark blue variegated lines, and a dark blue-black streak leading into the tail and rear fins, all trimmed in brilliant blue.
This species inhabits coral, rock, and rubble reefs at depths from 5 to over 130 metres, living in pairs or small harems of one male with several females, typically under ledges or on reef slopes with plenty of shelter.
We want to be honest: this species is not reef safe, and will nip at soft and stony coral polyps, sessile invertebrates, zoanthids, and clam mantles, with individual behaviour genuinely varying. It's also genuinely territorial toward other dwarf angelfish, and can take some patience to acclimate onto prepared foods initially.
