📋 The Bella Sleeper Goby, also known simply as the Bella Goby, has a striking maroon-pink to orange body, with a golden-yellow head marked by a pair of sapphire-blue stripes below the eyes. Adults develop a distinctive black patch under the chin as they mature.
It comes from a narrow range around the sandy reef bottoms of Japan, the rarest and most sought-after member of the Valenciennea genus in the aquarium trade, which naturally makes its availability inconsistent. Every Bella Sleeper Goby we ship is feeding well.
A fascinating detail worth correcting a common misconception: this species doesn't simply eat detritus; it's a true carnivorous sand-sifter, repeatedly gulping mouthfuls of substrate and filtering out small crustaceans and worms through its gills before expelling clean sand. In the wild, these gobies mate for life wherever possible. It's fully reef safe and a valuable substrate cleaner, but should not be housed with other Valenciennea species, and it's sensitive to ammonia and nitrite, so it should only be added to a well-established, biologically mature tank with a healthy sand bed. It's also a capable jumper, so a secure lid matters. It reaches up to 15cm, so a 115L tank suits it well.
