📋 The Bicolor Dottyback (Pseudochromis paccagnellae), also known as the Royal Dottyback, is a small but strikingly coloured marine fish with a bold purple-to-pink front half and a vivid yellow rear half — a pattern often confused with the Royal Gramma at a glance, though the two are unrelated.
Native to reefs across the Central Indo-Pacific, this species lives among rock and coral rubble, where it establishes a burrow or crevice as its home base.
We want to be genuinely upfront with you on this one: despite its small size, the Bicolor Dottyback is one of the more aggressive fish you can put in a reef tank. It's extremely territorial, will readily fight to the death with its own species or similar-looking fish, and is known to bully and nip fish considerably larger than itself if there's nothing to keep it in check. Without appropriately assertive tank mates, it can become the unchallenged bully of the tank. It's also a genuine predator of small ornamental shrimp, so keep that in mind if you're planning a cleanup crew. For the best results, add it as one of the last fish to an already-established community rather than early on, and skip pairing it with small, timid, or slow-moving species.
Despite these real behavioural considerations, this species is genuinely hardy and easy to keep, making it a popular choice for keepers who understand what they're taking on.
