🐠 Strawberry Dottyback (Pseudochromis porphyreus)

Marine Reef-Safe-With-Caution Nano Dottyback • Bright, Solid Magenta Body With Clear Fins • Genuine Naming Overlap With the Orchid Dottyback • Beginner-Friendly Marine Fish

📋 We want to be genuinely upfront on naming: this species is also commonly called the Magenta Dottyback or Purple Dottyback, and it's genuinely easy to confuse with our Orchid Dottyback (Pseudochromis fridmani) — the two are distinguished by this species' clear fins, versus the Orchid Dottyback's genuine black eye stripe.

📋 The Strawberry Dottyback has a genuinely eye-catching, bright, solid-coloured magenta body.

Native to a genuinely wide range across the Western Pacific, from the Philippines to Samoa, north to the Ryukyu Islands and south to the Moluccas and Admiralty Islands, this species occasionally makes its way into the aquarium trade.

This is a genuinely popular and hardy dottyback, and while it's considered somewhat less aggressive than many of its relatives, we want to be honest that it can still be territorial, particularly toward fish with a similar body shape, and is best kept singly per tank unless introduced simultaneously as a confirmed pair in a genuinely spacious setup. It's considered reef safe with caution — it won't harm corals or most invertebrates, but will genuinely eat small ornamental shrimp. We want to note that this species, like other Pseudochromis, may genuinely be more sensitive to copper-based medications, so care should be taken during any treatment.
