📋 The Blue Lined Dottyback , also known as Springer's Dottyback or the Blue-Striped Dottyback, has a genuinely striking jet-black to charcoal body highlighted with vivid electric-blue lines across the head and fin edges.
Native to the Red Sea, this species inhabits shallow reef structure, hiding among caves and overhangs by day and making quick, agile excursions around the tank before darting back to shelter.
A genuinely fun natural behaviour: this species will readily hunt nuisance bristleworms in your tank, and it's genuinely not uncommon to see white bristle worm spines briefly protruding from its face after a meal — this doesn't bother the fish, and the spines quickly disappear. It's also genuinely a protogynous hermaphrodite, meaning females can transition to male, though not back again.
It's considered reef safe with caution — it won't harm corals, but it may prey on very small or freshly moulted ornamental shrimp, particularly in smaller tanks. We want to be honest that it's genuinely territorial toward its own kind and similarly shaped fish, so it's best kept singly, or as a pair introduced together, and added toward the end of your stocking order alongside other confident, similarly assertive tank mates.
