⚠️ Important Information — Please Read First

We want to be genuinely upfront on this one. This species is a soapfish, and its skin mucus genuinely contains a toxin called grammistin, which can be released as a soapy, frothy lather when the fish is severely stressed or dying — this can potentially harm or kill other fish in the tank. While this is genuinely rare in captivity with careful handling, please avoid using shipping water in your tank, handle this species gently, and avoid stressing it unnecessarily.

📋 The Freckleface Podge, also known as the Red Soapfish, has a genuinely dark red body mottled with brown, with a reddish-grey head that pales abruptly toward the lower half.

Native to the Indo-Pacific, this species inhabits reef-associated rocky, cave-dwelling habitats at depths of roughly 12 to 24 metres, and is genuinely a real rarity, only occasionally seen in the aquarium trade.

A genuinely fascinating ambush predator, this species sits and waits, much like a small lionfish, ready to swallow passing prey whole. It's genuinely secretive, and will hide until food is offered. It has a genuinely low metabolism, requiring feeding only every other day. We want to be honest that this species is considered reef safe with caution — it won't harm corals directly, but will eat any fish or small crustaceans it can fit in its mouth, so it's best suited to a nano tank without vulnerable small tank mates.
