This species is genuinely the largest coral-reef-dwelling bony fish in the world, capable of reaching up to 2.7 metres (nearly 9 feet) in length and 400kg in weight. The small juvenile typically sold will not stay small — it will keep growing for the rest of its life, and no realistic home aquarium can accommodate a full-grown adult. This is fundamentally a public-aquarium-scale species. Please only consider this fish if you have a genuine, concrete, long-term plan in place — such as an established relationship with a public aquarium or dedicated large facility willing to take the fish as it grows — and please speak with our team in detail before purchasing.
 
📋 The Giant Grouper, also known as the Queensland Grouper or Brindle Bass, has a genuinely mottled tan-brown adult body with irregular dark spots providing camouflage, while juveniles display a genuinely striking contrasting black-and-yellow or black-and-white pattern that changes dramatically with growth.
Native to the Indo-Pacific, this species genuinely has the widest distribution of any grouper, inhabiting reefs, rocky areas, and estuaries. It is a solitary, territorial ambush predator that will genuinely eat anything it can fit in its mouth, including crustaceans, cephalopods, and fish, and is documented to be highly intolerant of other individuals of its own kind outside of breeding.
We want to be upfront: this species is not reef safe, and given its genuinely enormous adult size and predatory nature, it should be the sole occupant of any tank it's housed in. It's genuinely a protogynous hermaphrodite, beginning life as female before some individuals transition to male with age.
