📋 The Giant Grouper, also known as the Queensland Grouper or Brindle Bass, is the largest coral-reef-dwelling bony fish on Earth, capable of reaching 2.7 metres (nearly 9 feet) and 400kg. Juveniles are strikingly patterned in contrasting black-and-yellow or black-and-white, a pattern that changes dramatically as the fish grows into its mottled tan-brown adult dress with irregular dark spots.
It has the widest distribution of any grouper, across the Indo-Pacific on reefs, rocky areas, and estuaries. It's a solitary, territorial ambush predator that will eat anything it can fit in its mouth, including crustaceans, cephalopods, and fish. It's intelligent and full of character, and it keeps growing for life.
That makes it a species for keepers with a facility-scale plan: a very large dedicated system that grows with the fish, with feeding that scales to its size. It's not reef safe, and a juvenile is an eye-catching centrepiece for a spacious aquarium as it grows. Plan for its adult size from day one.
