We want to be genuinely upfront on this one. This species genuinely grows very large, reaching up to 90cm (around 35") in the wild, with expert sources genuinely recommending a minimum aquarium size ranging from 300 up to 1000 litres or more for a fully grown adult. This species is genuinely a top predator, capable of swallowing whole any fish small enough to fit in its mouth, including cleaner wrasse, so please only consider this species with a serious, concrete long-term plan for its truly large eventual size and predatory nature.
 
📋 The Yellow Edged Lyretail Grouper, also known as the Lyretail Grouper, Coronation Grouper, Cherry Grouper, or Moontail Seabass, undergoes a genuinely dramatic transformation through its life: at 10-15cm, juveniles display a broad black horizontal mid-body band with red-to-yellowish colouring above and whitish underneath, mid-sized fish become an intense purple with bright blue spots overall, and adults deepen to a rich red-to-maroon body covered in spots, with the tail developing its namesake crescent, or "lyre," shape edged in yellow.
Native to the Indo-Pacific, from the Red Sea to South Africa and the Pitcairn Islands, north to southern Japan, and south to New South Wales, Australia, this species is genuinely most colourful and healthy when sourced from the Red Sea.
We want to share a genuinely interesting fact: this species is genuinely relatively hardy and disease-resistant compared to some other groupers, and it's genuinely an outgoing fish that quickly adapts to new surroundings, spending much of its time in full view. This is genuinely a solitary, territorial species best kept alone, or with other robust, similarly sized fish, and it will genuinely fight with others of its own kind. We want to be upfront: this species is not reef safe, and will genuinely consume ornamental crustaceans and any tank mates small enough to fit in its mouth.
